Five Free Activities For Kids

Looking for some inspiration on how to keep your children entertained without it costing a fortune? Here are some of Wander Mum’s suggestions for FREE activities.

1. Picnic In The Park (weather permitting obviously)
Grab some food, invite fellow parents and take essential park accessories such as a frisbee, bat and ball etc and have a fun day outdoors… Maybe even sneak a cheeky bottle of wine into the picnic basket.

2. Get Crafty
Time to channel your inner Blue Peter presenter and create a masterpiece from some old cartons and toilet rolls. What child doesn’t love painting, drawing and generally making a mess- well that is the draw back but if you can stand it…hours of fun. There are loads of websites and blogs around to get some inspiration. I love Niki and her ideas at Play & Learn Everyday.

3. Home Baking
What kid doesn’t love making cakes and biscuits? Most of you will already have the majority of ingredients in your cupboards and you get a nice sweet treat at the end of it (might just make up for all that washing up left at the end.)

4. Gallery/Museum Visit
There are more than two hundred museums and art galleries in London and plenty elsewhere in the UK which are funded by the government so have FREE admission. Whether you are into science, natural history, transport or art there really is a museum or gallery for everyone.

5. Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Children are fascinated with vehicles: buses, diggers, planes, cars…you name it. Go to a bus/train station or find a nearby bridge overlooking a railway track or motorway and watch them coming and going. If you live near an airport, take a trip down and watch the planes take off and land.

Wander Mum

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. Great ideas!! My boy just loves to go on anything that moves, so he often spends all day on a Monday traveling with my father-in-law on trains and buses and metros and ferries (he’s got free passes for everything as he’s over 65 and also used to work for the railway, which gives him a free pass for life!!)
