Aldwark Manor Estate in North Yorkshire was a hotel I stumbled upon it whilst researching somewhere to stay in Yorkshire for a family holiday. I had left it fairly late to book so didn’t go armed with many expectations. We were embarking on a summer UK holiday in Yorkshire to visit family. Reserving through booking.com, the luxury Yorkshire hotel had the required elements each family member wanted. I was looking for somewhere picturesque in the county – away from London life – but within distance of things to do in Yorkshire with children. My two girls (aged 9 and 6) wanted a swimming pool and my husband just wanted somewhere fairly luxurious to relax and be close to his family.
As soon as we drove up its long winding drive surround by golf course on either side, we felt a wave of relaxation come over us, We then saw the impressive outside of the building, with fountain and flower display, and were convinced this was going to be a successful family stay.
Alwark Manor Golf and Spa Hotel
Set in an 185-acre estate in North Yorkshire, the main part which houses Aldwark Manor hotel is a Victorian building which has been a hotel for almost 50 years. It was acquired by a local family business in 2019 who gave it a multi-million pound renovation during the global pandemic before reopening in May 2019.
The result is a hotel with stunning interiors and newly refurbished rooms. There is still more to come: a sports bar and club house for golfers is underway. A spa area and swimming pool are also planned as well as further event space for weddings and conferences.
Alwark Manor is surrounded by farmland and rolling countryside and is 14 miles from York. The historical city of York has plenty of family activities to do for a variety of ages.
Rooms at Aldwark Manor
We booked a family room at Aldwark Manor Hotel. It was fairly spacious with beautiful views over the ground. There was a king bed for the adults and the sofa bed was made up for the two children. As the hotel facilities were so good and there were activities to do in and around the area, we didn’t spent much time in the hotel room. The bathroom was newly fitted and it had all the essentials: tea and coffee, snacks, iron and television. There was also free wifi throughout the hotel. Food at Aldwark Manor Estate
I hadn’t done a lot of research into the restaurant at Aldwark Manor but I booked dinner there for our first evening. A flower arch leads the way into the art-deco restaurant while quirky paintings line the walls. The circular bar area has a canopy of leaves dangling from a trunk-like centre accentuating its place as a focal point.
The high quality dining menu uses natural and sustainable foods. The chef, Keiran Smith, has worked in several rosette restaurants and enjoys playing with different flavours and textures. They are unique dishes and everything we ordered was delicious. The first night I ordered pot roasted chicken with crab cannelloni while my husband had lamb with asparagus, creamed potatoes and crisp lamb fillet. The starters were also excellent as well as the desserts.
There is a children’s menu which the chef kindly adapted for the girls as they wanted a different sauce on their pasta. Other children’s favourites were on the menu such as pizza, fish and chips and cheeseburger. We ate at the hotel the second night too.
Breakfast was included in our room rate. It is served in the same room as dinner and the circular bar is the place to go for your continental style breakfast. Laid out on the bar are pastries, pancakes, toast, cereals, juices and fresh fruits and you can order a hot dish as well.

Golf
An 18-hole golf course surrounds the hotel and for golf fans it is a go-to activity with hotel packages available for those wanting a golf break in Yorkshire. The hotel is currently modifying the course so, for this season, are offering 9 holes – which can be played twice.
Swimming pool, gym and spa
We spent a lot of time at the swimming pool during our stay. It is a 25 metre pool which has a separate jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and treatments are available too. There is also a gym with all the necessary equipment, including a good range of weights as well as cardio and strength machines.
Other activities
The hotel also has outdoor games to play. My girls loved the giant chess board and attempted a game of croquet. If you want to get active, there’s a number of walking and cycle routes around the local countryside.
