Why Visit The French Alps In Summer?

Gone are the snow-tipped mountains and the noise of ski boots and snowboards clattering down the street. Instead, beautiful sunshine and a peaceful ambience rests over the French Alps. More used to flying down the snowy mountains, we decided to go in search of what the Alps had the offer during the summer months.

The first thing that hit us when we awoke the next day after our short journey (Morzine is just an hour’s drive form Geneva airport) was the quiet. Aside from a dog barking, some cows mooing and the sound of the stream rushing through the village, there was nothing to detract our attention from the dramatic green scenery of the mountains, the quaint cottages and colourful wild flowers. Taking a deep breath our lungs were filled with clean, fresh air. We already felt refreshed!

Visiting the town of Morzine in the Haute-Savoie region of France during the month of June is a particularly quiet time to go. It sits in the period between the end of the ski season and before the bike season starts to get busy.  There are limited restaurants open but enough to keep you fed in different places for a few nights. To be honest, we quite liked the unusual quietness. Plus, my husband’s favourite bar was open so he was happy. Towards July, businesses fully open for the summer visitors.

But what is there to do in the Alps when the mountain turns from white to green? Well, there’s the mountain biking season for starters. Instead of skiing, people navigate the thousands of kilometres of terrain which cover the Portes du Soleil on bikes. They can buy a pass for the chair lifts and use the downhill and cross-country trails used in winter by skiers. The Tour de France often goes through this region so that is an added excitement for fans wanting see the professionals at work (it last visited Morzine in 2014).

If that sounds a little over-adventurous, you can enjoy a more sedate ride around the bike trails on flatter ground. Bikes are available to hire although during peak season you may want to reserve them beforehand – particularly children’s cycles – as these are limited. You could also go hiking in the mountains although be wary of the heat. It can get very hot!

Going at the end of June, we were just a few days too early to experience the outdoor swimming pool park at the Parc des Dérêches complex which has a paddling pool and a  heated Olympic-sized pool, as well as a water slide and a bouncy castle. An absolute winner for children!

Just a short walk from the pool is a riding school. We didn’t go for a ride although Mrs T certainly enjoyed looking at the horses in the stables.

The riding school is set in a large parkland with walking and biking trails, woodland area and a beautiful stream. There is also a children’s playground and lots of space for children to run around and safely enjoy the great outdoors.

Morzine is a great base to visit other places. One day we drove up to the nearby mountain village, Les Lindarets, near Montriond.

A popular stop-off for skiiers in the winter with a number of good quality restaurants, in the summer it is known as the ‘the goat village’. There are certainly a lot of them! They wander the narrow road, sitting wherever they please and show no interest in getting out of the way of passing cars.

Another day we took a trip to the medieval town Yvoire on the shores of Lake Geneva. With a 14th century castle, narrow alleys hiding quirky shops and restaurants, beautiful gardens and ducks to feed on the lake, Yvoire it is a delightful place to wander around and is deservedly nicknamed the ‘gem of the lake’.

Then there is the town of Thonon which is also on the French side of Lake Geneva. Brave swimmers dive into the icy water and chill out by the banks of the lake or perhaps go boating; while there are plenty of good restaurants to enjoy the local fish. One of our favourites is La Jolla restaurant in Port de Sechex which has a beautiful big terrace with views of the lake and excellent food.Thonon, France

Other places within an hour and a half’s drive of Morzine and the Portes du Soleil area include Geneva, Annecy, Evian and Chamonix – to name a few. There are also plenty of lakes and waterfalls dotted around the Alpine region which are a delight to visit.

The Alps is a brilliant place for families to go. My husband spent much of his childhood holidays playing out with his family and friends in the mountains enjoying the great outdoors and a slower pace of life.

The French Alps are certainly not just for winter skiing. In fact, I would say there are far more activities to do in the summer months: whether it be biking, hiking or even white water rafting if you are after some adrenaline-fueled adventure. Or, there is the option to simply enjoy peace and tranquility in stunning surroundings. Oh, and great food and wine too of course – this is France after all.

Have you visited the Alps in summer? Or is it somewhere you would like to go? I would love to know your experiences and get some ideas too!

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

  1. Looks amazing after years of exploring the big cities of Europe i am starting to yearn for places smaller and not so crowded this looks excellent

  2. We camped in Chamonix one summer, having taken an overnight bus from London to get there due to a air traffic control strike! It wasn’t the most auspicious of starts but we had a great holiday. In every one of my photos I appear to have a baguette sticking out of my rucksack ready for a picnic on the mountains. #Mondayescapes

    1. Haha! Brilliant. Do as the French do! Gosh that sounds like a hideous journey.. The French air traffic control have a habit of going on strike! Glad you had fun though and it was all worth it. Chamonix is beautiful xx

    1. Hi Laura, how fab! I’m hoping my daughter will have a similar experience as we intend on visiting fairly regularly. There’s something about the mountains and the air. It’s stunning. X

  3. Gosh, reading this has brought back memories-my husband and I visited Morzine in the summer before our children came along. Such a beautiful part of the world and we visited all the same places as you! I vividly remember watching an electrical storm from our balcony too-very impressive sight.

    1. Oh, how wonderful ! And funny that we had a similar holiday. Such a beautiful part of the world. So glad to bring back memories for you… Makes me feel all warm inside. Xx

  4. We stayed in Evian last summer and our kids loved the goats at Les Lindarets. We also liked Yvoire a lot, although we went on a blazing hot and very busy day in August. We’re back in the Alps again next month – this year we’re staying closer to Lake Annecy.

    1. Oh fantastic!! It’s a great part of the world, isn’t it? Have a fantastic time next month! Look forward to hearing all about it. Xx

  5. How sorry I am that we didn’t get to the French Alps on our recent European trip. My husband and I spent a week in Chamonix back in 2002 (before kids) but our schedule didn’t give us enough time to visit this year. I love visiting mountains in the summertime- bike riding or hiking, the fresh air. Truly spectacular, isn’t it?

  6. Thanks for linking up to #AllAboutFrance (would you mind adding the badge please?) We live 90 mins from Alpine resorts in the Southern Alps and often go for hikes and VTT bike rides in the Mercantour National Park and surrounds. You’re right that there’s plenty to do in the mountains in the summer.

  7. Funnily enough we have visited in the summer too, not for a long time but we went when our eldest was a baby and had a lovely week staying at a relatives ski lodge. I must say I think I preferred it in summer as a non skier though my kids would love the chance to go in winter skiing. I think you found more to do than we did though it looks every bit as beautiful as I member. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

    1. It’s great isn’t it! Loads to do and fantastic for children. Glad you had a good time. The scenery really is stunning. So pleased it brought back memories for you. Xx

  8. A great idea to go in the summer. I’ve never been skiing in the alps, but can imagine it being quite different to the summer quietness you’ve described. One of the main reasons I love walking in the mountains at home is for the quietness, so it must be bliss if you’re used to the business of the ski season. So many gorgeous places to visit there too!
Thanks for linking up to #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x

  9. Oh wow i’d never think to come here in summer. Although my OH has just had ago at me because apprently he goes on about wanting to mountain bike here in summer all the time (i think i normally switch off and just nod at these times). Maybe we really should visit. I’d love the peace and quiet and he’d love the bike trails. It looks so beautiful and even though not much was open, just the scenery and a slower pace of life must have made this the perfect family holiday. Thank you so much for linking to #whatevertheweather 🙂 x

    1. Haha Chloe. sounds a bit like me and my hubby. I was a bit the same and never saw it as a summer destination so was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. So lovely and quiet and the mountains are just stunning. Thanks for hosting #whatevertheweather xx

  10. I love the alps all year round! I used to live in Switzerland for a few years as a child and some of my best memories were of hiking up mountains in the summer. Nothing beats getting to the top and seeing snow in summer. Your pictures look great, sounds like you had a wonderful time! Love the goats 🙂 #bigfatlinky
