Storytime Magazine Review and Giveaway

Buying my daughter a kids magazine at the airport was one of her treats before we’d jet off on holiday. The theory was it would give her something to do on the flight and entertain her for parts of the holiday. She’d always go for the magazine with the most attractive plastic toys on the front. Sound familiar?

Often the rest of the magazine was discarded without much of a look. In fact, I have a pile of them at home which I am hoping one day she’ll complete. After the initial excitement of the toys has faded and the odd sticker page has been done, there wasn’t a lot in the way of content. Discovering a new kind of magazine, Storytime, has been very refreshing. It is packed with quality story content –  and not a plastic toy in sight.

Storytime isn’t your average kids magazine. Each issue has several different stories – it’s more like a book of short stories than a magazine. There’s a mix of fairy tales, poems, myths and legends and folk tales. Some stories have a modern twist on a traditional tale and there’s always an international story too which adds to the magazine’s educational value.

My daughter has really enjoyed looking through the magazine’s eye-catching, colourful illustrations and reading some of the stories with me. Many of them are by well known children’s writers such as Michael Rosen and Amanda Brandon – a mark of its quality.

The magazine is also a handy travel companion. We no longer have to pack bulky books on holiday, we have a magazine with several stories a day to devour. We also don’t need to get another branded children’s magazine which never gets read!

Storytime doesn’t have any plastic toys, stickers or adverts. As well as the stories, each issue has puzzles, games and colouring which Mrs T enjoys completing. As it is a subscription magazine, there’s always huge excitement when one drops through the letterbox addressed to her.

Storytime is printed on high-quality paper which means it can weather our travels AND take pride of place in my daughter’s book shelf.

I really like the ethos and background to Storytime. It was set up by a team who worked in publishing for well-known branded magazines who wanted to create a kids magazine that put the focus back on reading again.

Storytime also runs as a social enterprise. Profit is reinvested to support parents in spending more time reading with their children and working with schools, charities and councils to improve the literacy of families across the UK.
