6 Reasons To Visit Copenhagen

It may get dark – and cold – during the winter months but Copenhagen is fast being one of the hottest destinations to visit. Those who live there already know what they have in their hands and Denmark regularly tops happiness surveys. Having visited Copenhagen last winter, I highly recommend it as a city break. Here’s 6 reasons to visit Copenhagen.

1. It’s Happy!

This month Denmark was, once again, crowned the happiest country in the world to live – for the third time in four years. Visiting its capital, Copenhagen, it’s not hard to see why. The Danes are content, friendly and incredibly welcoming and they enjoy a good, clean quality of life.

2. Bike Culture

Seeing businessmen and women commute to work on bikes with baskets is always a joy to behold. The city is set up perfectly for cyclists with 50% of its citizens going to work by bike every day. In fact, there are more bikes than inhabitants and 400km of biking lanes.

Around a quarter of Copenhagen residents who have children use a cargo bike to get around. They are available to hire for those tourists wanting to indulge in Copenhagen’s bike culture. Since October 2014, the city has had a bike scheme similar to London’s ‘Boris bikes’. There are literally bikes everywhere!

3. Compact

Part of its ability to have such a booming bike culture is the compact size of the city. It is easy to walk around and buggy-friendly. With a population of just 1.2 million, the city doesn’t feel too busy or crowded when wandering the streets.

4. Child-friendly

Welcomed throughout the city, there is no shortage of activities to entertain little ones. Take the world famous Tivoli Gardens for instance. The magical theme park is a must for children and big kids alike.

There are also plenty of museums catering for children including The Blue Planet aquarium, the Children’s museum and Copenhagen zoo as well. It is also the home of Lego so a trip to the flagship store would be high on the list.

Of course, Copenhagen was home to Hans Christian Anderson – the famous writer of fairytales. His Little Mermaid statue is a must-see when you are there (although you may be a little disappointed at its diminutive appearance).

5. Food

Copenhagen is a haven for foodies. Not only does it have the world’s best restaurant of 2014, Noma, it also has 14 other Michelin-starred restaurants in town – you have your pick of gourmet food. And with Nordic cuisine continuing to break onto the world stage – you will be right on trend.

6. Clean and Green

The city was voted the European Green Capital in 2014 and is aspiring to become carbon neutral by 2025.

So, what are you waiting for? Book a hotel here.

I've always loved to travel so when my two daughters came along, I didn't stop. Travelling as a family can have its ups and downs but I love showing my children the world and helping others navigate travelling with children in tow.

    1. I know – it would make a big difference. Unfortunately London just isn’t set up for safe cycling in my opinion. But maybe that will change in the future.

  1. I do love Copenhagen – although the Little Mermaid was definitely a bit littler than I’d anticipated. But that was the only thing I didn’t love 100% about my visit to the city, such a great place to explore, especially with kids. #citytripping

  2. I’ve been reading about Tivoli Gardens on several blogs before – it looks like a lovely place to visit! And I remember when my daughter learned the real story of the little mermaid.. We decided to pretend we haven’t read it and go back to the Disney one 🙂 #citytripping

    1. I’ve just refreshed my memory with the original story and think I’ll stick with the Disney version too! Tivoli Gardens is excellent!

  3. I am eager to visit this city (and more cities in Scandinavian countries). It has become more and a more of a hot destinations due in part for all the reasons you have mentioned in here. I am really interesting in trying the food.

    1. I loved the cycle culture – so much cleaner – and great to see people from every background, young and old, cycling around the city. Hope you get to Copenhagen soon. x

  4. We’re hoping to visit Copenhagen and Stockholm this summer. I’ve heard such wonderful things about how kid-friendly everything is in Denmark. Can’t wait to go!

  5. We went a long time ago, before we had kids, but I always think it would be lovely to go back and take them. It’s a very pretty city, walkable and with a lot (but not too much!) to do.

  6. After reading your post – I think the first time, this was what got me looking into going maybe later this year! You’ve certainly sold it to me and the flights are really reasonable at the mo! #citytripping
