There is no shortage of family activities in and around London over Christmas and New Year: from ice skating to theatre and Christmas markets. Here’s five things to do in London with kids at Christmas.
1. Winter Wonderland
Hyde Park is turned into a huge theme park during the winter months where you have your pick of Christmas fun and activities for its Winter Wonderland. There is a Christmas market, fairground rides including an observation wheel, a circus, a magical ice kingdom and a production of The Nutcracker on Ice. It is free to enter with rides, shows, food, drink extra. It’s open until January 2, 2017.
2. Ice Skating
In winter, ice rinks pop up all over London – in the backdrop of some of the capital’s most historic buildings. The Natural History Museum, Hampton Court Palace, The Tower of London and Somerset House are just some of the picturesque locations where you can go ice skating.
If you aren’t keen on outside skating, Westfield London has rinks suitable for children over 4 complete with penguin and seal stabilisers for those less experienced children (and adults)!
3. Harry Potter Studio Tour
You can visit ‘Hogwarts In The Snow’ at the Warner Bros Studio Tour near Watford, just outside London. The home of the Harry Potter films, this seasonal attraction, is the chance to see some of the film’s most iconic sets beautifully decorated for festive scenes – with some special effects thrown in for good measure. It is running until January 29, 2017,
4. Theatre and Carol Concerts
You are spoilt for choice for children’s theatre in London especially around Christmas. You can’t get more festive than The Snowman! A live theatre version of Raymond Bigg’s iconic book is playing at the Peacock Theatre from November 23 until January 1 while there’s the Railway Children, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (at the Ambassador’s Theatre) and Dr Suess’ Cat In The Hat showing at the Pleasance Theatre until January 2, 2017. For Frozen fans (so pretty much any child between the ages of 2 and 10), Disney’s Frozen on Ice is being performed at the O2 for a limited run.
Two adaptations of children’s favourite author, Julia Donaldson, are showing in London this winter too. The Gruffalo at the Lyric Theatre is on until January 17 (see my review here) and Stick Man, which we have now seen twice, is playing again at the Leicester Square theatre. And of course there is panto! Oh yes there is! Plenty of productions going on in London and throughout the UK. If you are into seeing something really festive, then head to one of the many Christmas carol concerts going on throughout the capital.
5. The Southbank
A lively place at all times of the year but during the winter London’s Southbank turns into a ‘London Wonderground’ with the area by the River Thames taken over by a Christmas market featuring plenty of food stalls among the 50 chalet-style huts. There is also a carousel, the 60m tall Star Flyer ride, the contemporary circus show BIANCO and the BUMP Rollerdisco! Inside the Southbank Centre, the Million Dollar Quartet musical is being performed.

Oh yes, you certainly do Hilary!
Some great suggestions here. I love the idea of skating in front of some of London’s most iconic sights and this year, I really fancy taking a look at a Christmassy Southbank. #citytripping

These are fab suggestions! I grew up in London but live just outside now so I always take my kids in on the train at Christmas time, it is just so magical!
#citytripping
It is! I do love it at Christmas time!
So, I would need all the stabilisers to go ice skating! It looks like a lot of fun but I’m just SO clumsy. The theatre is a great idea, and I still haven’t been to the Harry Potter studios despite the fact they’re so close to me, so maybe Christmas is the perfect time to go!

Oh yes, I think the Harry Potter tour looks particularly magical in winter. And I am with you on the stabilisers. Haven’t skated in ages!
I love London in the winter! It remember when we went Ice Skating at Somerset House – it really got us in the Christmas spirit! #citytripping
How lovely! I still need to go!
Hogwarts in the snow sounds absolutely magical (pun intended!) although I do fancy a bit if ice skating too. #citytripping

It really does! I’m seem to be working my way through kids theatre in London this year. Two down, one to go.
I love London at Christmas time! I haven’t braved Winter Wonderland with our two yet but wondering if this will be the year. What do you think for 3 year olds?

I haven’t done Winter Wonderland yet although my husband went with Mrs T who was three last year and they seemed to have a good time. He spent £10 (!) on two MASSIVE lollies for her and her cousin so guess it was a winner in her eyes. I wasn’t so happy!
Ooh great list, I am so missing London at the moment – hope you are having lots of fun! #citytripping

Great list! I am going to London with my now 20 year old daughter next month and we can’t wait! She also wants to go to Harry Potter for her 21st – would love to see Hogwarts in the snow myself! Must get the tickets sorted!
Great list for everyone! #citytripping

Oh wow – have a great time together! Yes, get those tickets sorted. x
If I would tell Mrs Daisy the bus about “Hogwarts in the snow”, we would probably have to completely re-write our Christmas travel plans. So I think I’ll just keep this to myself. 🙂
Great post and wonderful ideas for Christmas in the big city. Thanks for the great #CityTripping linky!

Haha – yes, you should probably keep it to yourself. Thank for being part of the #citytripping linky!
Our last trip to London was in the spring time. Now I wish we’d gone over Christmas instead. These all look like they would be a blast for our family.
Spring in London is still a great time! Always something going on. I love all the lights lit up in winter and the markets and smell of chestnuts.
All looks brilliant. Is Elf still on at the theatre? Went last year and was brilliant. I must get to the Potter studio as I love all that stuff. #CityTriping
Oh, was it. I don’t think Elf is on this year which is a shame. I need to do the studio tour too – heard great things.
I think that London must be such a magical place at Christmas time, especially with kids! Thanks for hosting #citytripping!

I love London around this time of year with all the pretty lights, and we’ve still not managed to go ice skating yet – tut! We went to see The Gruffalo when my kids were little and thought it was absolutely brilliant, I would wholeheartedly recommend it! #citytripping

I love it too! We are actually going to the Gruffalo for the second time this weekend – I’m rather looking forward to seeing it again!
Your post is making me feel very festive now and coincidentally as I write this comment, the date is 25th November, exactly one month to Christmas! #citytripping
It is! Hurrah! One month to go.
London with all the Christmas lights is just too beautiful!!
I’d love to go to Hogwarts in the snow!!!!
It’s a great time to be in the city (although cold)!
